The Presentation of Jesus and Our Call to Grow in Faith
A short message delivered at the Wednesday service on 5th February 2025.
Luke 2:22-40
Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, a moment of great significance in the life of Christ and in God’s unfolding plan of salvation. Mary and Joseph, faithful to the Law, bring their infant Son to the temple in obedience to God. In doing so, they meet two remarkable figures—Simeon and Anna—both of whom have been waiting, watching, and longing for the fulfilment of God’s promises.
Simeon takes the child in his arms and praises God, declaring that he has seen God’s salvation. Anna, a prophetess, gives thanks and speaks of the child to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. This passage reminds us that Jesus is the light for all people, the one who brings salvation to the world. But it also reminds us that faith is something that grows over time.
This theme of faith growing and deepening is one we saw beautifully in our combined service last Sunday, as we witnessed the confirmation of Melissa Wills, Temiah Cyster, Channing Cyster, and Emily-Rose Cyster. Like Mary and Joseph presenting Jesus in obedience to God, these four individuals have publicly affirmed their faith in Christ, committing themselves to walk in His light. We rejoice with them and give thanks for God’s work in their lives.
Just as Simeon and Anna had a long journey of faith, so too our confirmands are called to continue growing in Christ. Confirmation is not the end of the journey but a significant step along the way. As a church family, we have the privilege and responsibility to pray for them, encourage them, and walk alongside them in their discipleship.
May we all, like Simeon and Anna, remain faithful and expectant, ever growing in our love for Christ. And may those who were confirmed last Sunday continue to be strengthened by the Holy Spirit as they shine the light of Jesus in the world.
